Beam is the lamp for rooms that can't spare the floor. A 4 cm brushed-brass column rises 165 cm from a disc base no wider than a dinner plate, and a concealed LED at the top throws light straight up onto the ceiling, which bounces it back down as soft, completely indirect illumination. There is no visible bulb, no hotspot, and no glare from any seated position in the room.

Uplighting is the oldest trick in architectural lighting, and for good reason: it's the fastest way to make a small room feel larger and a low ceiling feel higher. Beam does it in the smallest possible footprint, which makes it the right choice for hallways, apartment corners, the gap between a sofa and a wall, or anywhere a shade would be in the way.

We gave it a brushed finish rather than a mirror polish because brass should age. Left alone it will slowly warm and take on a faint patina; a wipe with a brass cloth brings it back if you prefer it bright. The base is weighted steel under the brass sleeve, so it's genuinely hard to knock over despite the narrow profile.

Beam is dimmable from 5% to 100% with a discreet foot switch, and runs cool enough that the top of the column can be touched after hours of use — worth knowing if you have children or a cat who investigates everything.
