Eclipse solves a problem every living room has: the light you want is over the sofa, and the socket is over there. A 190 cm slender steel boom arm sweeps out of a weighted black marble column and hangs a wide spun-aluminium dome directly above where people actually sit — no ceiling wiring, no electrician, no drilling into a rental.

The engineering is all in the counterweight. A 9 kg cylinder of honed black marble sits low and wide, which is what lets the arm cantilever nearly a metre without a tripod foot or a diagonal brace. In practice that means you can slide the base behind a sofa or into a corner and still have the light land in the middle of the seating group, with nothing in the way of your legs.

The shade is a shallow dome with a white opal diffuser disc underneath, so light goes down where it's useful and the underside never blinds you when you look up. At 2700K with a dimmable bulb it's a reading light at full and a room-glow at a third — the difference between an evening you can work in and an evening you can relax in.

Eclipse is a big object that behaves like a small one. It assembles in under ten minutes with the supplied hex key, ships in two boxes to keep the marble safe, and once it's up you'll forget it's furniture.
